    my boy James

Hi, my son James has just started the programme for help with his Dyslexia, we have just had our first six week assesment and have noticed a change in him already although his results had not changed significantly.  Our main challenge with James is to get him to concentrate and stay focused whilst doing the exercises.  He does seem to feel that it is unfair that he has to do them and despite doing them with him or expalining why he is very easily distracted and that in turn frustrates us (his parents).  Can anybody give us any hints or tips as to encourage him.   Wink

Hi and welcome to the forum. I'm glad you have already noticed some changes in James. We noticed little changes in Laura within a few days which was so encouraging as she was going through a very bad time and it was just the boost we all needed.  You don't say how old James is. If he is young enough maybe a sticker chart would help. Perhaps you could put a sticker on it every time James makes an effort to concentrate on his exercises and when he reaches a set amount of stickers you could give him a special treat (it's amazing what a bit of bribery can achieve). Laura is usually quite motivated because she started to feel better very early on. If she has an off day and can't focus we tell her to think about how she used to feel before Dore and that often works ( along with lots of hugs). Try to appear calm even if you don't feel it, and give lots of  praise and encouragement and I'm sure it will get easier as he begins to realise that the exercises are working. I know it's difficult but try not to let him see your frustration, he's probably got enough of his own to deal with. I look forward to hearing about James' progress in the future. Hope things get easier for you soon. Big Smile GOOD LUCK.

Hi and welcome. We really struggled with the whole doing exercises properly thing. I'd defo go with the whole bribery/ blackmail/ reverse psycholgy route!! (*watches as Super Nanny has nervous breakdown*)..... Basically anything that works for you!! we used to tell J that for every minute he messes about/has a tantrum then he'll lose 10 mins off his reading time (his most precious time) but you could use playstation/tv/football time etc etc....

*WARNING* if using the treat/bribery route start small, because if you start big you have to escalate to keep them interested..it gets really expensive (my friend used to promise her kid a PS2 game every assement and @ £40 every 6 weeks it can get a bit silly!!!)

Good Luck, stay calm and drop by here if you need any help...we do try!!!!! xxx

Eraina - I do the PS2/DS or DVD for each assessment, but buy them on EBay - waaay cheaper! Big Smile

Impthing - if we are really struggling, I offer to come back to it later, but he is not allowed to watch a DVD, play a game, meet with friends etc., (yes he has friends now lol!) until the exercises are done. Usually, he comes back within 5 minutes! We do sometimes resort to treats, but I try to keep it to a minimum (we all have off days).

Our local Centre have charts like Spiderman, Simpson to keep them motivated. Ask when you next go.

My son Harry has been on the Dore programme since January 2007 and we were given a sticker chart to award him a sticker each time he gave 100% effort. this may motivate you son. Speak to you Dore adviser to aget a sticker chart. Regards Amanda

GREAT ADVICE, the whole bribery thing really worked and James is a lot more motivated to do his exercises even without bribery.  Latest request is a Drum kit though i'm up for it not so sure Sue is though..........

Harry does drums at school and his teacher is surprised he's not practicing (we don't have a kit @ home). He really loves music and is very enthusiastic about the drums.

I wish our school had drumming lessons!!! And guitar lessons...Im tone deaf and absolutely rubbish at anything muscial, but our house revolves around music!! at the last count i think the kids have got about 10 guitars (they bought them!!) 4 bass guitars, 2 keyboards and 3 flippin drum kits!! then andy goes and buys a bleedin PA system on ebay on monday AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!!!! We only live in a little terraced house, now the whole attic is taken up with instruments *sighs* I give up!!! on a brighter note the older boys arnt wanting to go out nd hang about up the street, they would rather be driving me mental at home!! xx

Sounds like you got a houseful there, I play Bass and encourage the kids to have a go.  James did do Guitar lessons at school but didnt really practice so it now resides under the bed.  Truth is i fancy a go at the drums myself but havent had the heart to tell Sue what im planning.  She did wonder why I was clearing a large kit shaped space in the garage though.  I think she thinks I've bought her a car for Christmas......  never mind eh.....Cool

What stage is Harry at now, james is still doing the co-ordination exercises and seems really motivated at the moment.  It  also ha sdawned on him that his football has improved and he just wrote a poem for anti bullying day.  couldn't have done that pre Dore........Cool

impthing - We have just moved onto mental exercises and at the last assessment had dropped back a bit. We continue on, but this week, there is a definite improvement in his attitude and his language and conversation seems to have taken on a maturity that wasn't there before.
