    misc questions

Hi- What are "executive functions"?  For mental tasks- cuz we've run out of ideas, we play a game I used to play as a child on long car drives; I say a word and then my son has to say a word that begins with the last letter of the word I just said. Then, I say a word that begins with the last letter of the word he said, and back and forth. Anything goes as for the words. Does this seem OK? The program director said it was OK.

    Hi Randall,

sorry I don't know what exectutive functions are. Great idea for mentals though. I'd forgotten about that game. I think I'll be using that one tomorrow. Thanks. Hope things are going O.K. Keep posting and keep smiling. It will all be worth it in the end.

    Re: misc questions

    Hi,

I googled it for you as it is hard to put in a sentence or two.  This is from LD on-line

    Executive Function Fact Sheet

    | Print |

    What is Executive Function?
"Executive Function" is a term used to describe a set of mental processes that helps us connect past experience with present action. We use executive function when we perform such activities as planning, organizing, strategizing and paying attention to and remembering details.

People with executive function problems as having difficulty with planning, organizing and managing time and space. They also show weakness with "working memory" (or "seeing in your mind's eye"), which is an important tool in guiding one's actions.

As with other manifestations of LD, disorders in executive function can run in families. Problems can be seen at any age but tend to be increasingly apparent as children move through the early elementary grades; the demands of completing schoolwork independently can often trigger signs that there are difficulties in this area.

How Does Executive Function Affect Learning?
In school, at home or in the workplace, we're called on all day, every day, to self-regulate behavior. Normally, features of executive function are seen in our ability to:

    • make plans
    • keep track of time
    • keep track of more than one thing at once
    • meaningfully include past knowledge in discussions
    • engage in group dynamics
    • evaluate ideas
    • reflect on our work
    • change our minds and make mid-course and corrections while thinking, reading and writing
    • finish work on time
    • ask for help
    • wait to speak until we're called on
    • seek more information when we need it.

These skills allow us to finish our work on time, ask for help when needed, wait to speak until we're called on and seek more information.

Problems with executive function may be manifested when a person:

    • has difficulty planning a project
    • has trouble comprehending how much time a project will take to complete
    • struggles to tell a story (verbally or in writing); has trouble communicating details in an organized, sequential manner
    • has difficulty with the mental strategies involved in memorization and retrieving information from memory
    • has trouble initiating activities or tasks, or generating ideas independently
    • has difficulty retaining information while doing something with it; e.g., remembering a phone number while dialing.

    Take care,

    Rebecca

    Re: misc questions

Oh hello! I'm here. Welcome over Randall. Smile

My son was diagnosed with executive function deficits. It is a big part of ADHD, but I do not know if this is a part of the "exia" etc., group of LD's. They consist of the abilities to plan tasks (think of all the tasks necessary to get an assignment turned in once it is assigned.....all those things), memory recall, etc. I love Chris Dendy's site on EFD:

    http://www.chrisdendy.com/executive.htm

I hope that links okay.  I reeeeaaaalllly had my doubts that Dore would address that, we went months with "seeing no change," so to speak.  The week of his last assessment where he received his final sets of wind-downs, the EFDs started really kicking in, like almost overnight. I love to tell the story of him taking out the garbage that week and remembering all the steps to complete the horrid chore, with me only looking on in total disbelief.  He's done it three times now! And I've taken it out since and forgotten to grab the liners on the way back in the house................... But that is just an example of the EFD's and the transference in his daily living.  THANK YOU DORE!  Lovely.
